College Student Services

Rosecrance Therapies-Connections Counseling provides services for college students who are underage and have been identified as using alcohol and/or cannabis. This harm reduction approach offers psychoeducational information about safe usage, patterns of use, and reasons for use.

How college student services work

Rosecrance’s prevention services for college students cover three areas: BASICS, CASICS, and Choices About Alcohol.

All three are evidence-based and nationally recognized prevention programs. BASICS and CASICS are delivered one-on-one with students, whereas Choices is provided in a group setting. The services are available for individuals ages 18 to 20 (younger than 21).

BASICS, which stands for Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students, is for college students experiencing challenges with alcohol or who are at risk for alcohol-related issues.

CASICS, which stands for Cannabis Screening and Brief Intervention for College Students, aims to reduce risky behaviors and harmful consequences of marijuana use.

Both BASICS and CASICS include a self-assessment for students to dig deeper into their alcohol and cannabis use, including how much they’re using, associated costs, and consequences of use. Students then review results with a therapist who helps identify and discuss risk factors, substance use education, safe levels of use, and much more.

These services use the principles of motivational interviewing to provide information in an empathetic, non-confrontational, and nonjudgmental manner.

Students or non-students may also be referred to Choices About Alcohol or BASICS from area court systems, attorneys, and/or other referral sources.

BASICS is also appropriate for college-aged individuals not currently enrolled in a university institution, who may have been referred from the court system, attorney, or other party.

Choices About Alcohol is a brief alcohol use prevention and harm reduction program for college students involving interactive journaling. There are two 90-minute, facilitated classes where students can reflect on what they have learned as it relates to their choices about drinking in their personal journals.

Because the central focus is to help students make informed choices, the journal is set up to provide participants with information, and then they are asked to apply what they have learned in a series of self-reflective questions.

Students or college-aged individuals not currently enrolled in a university or college may also be referred to Choices or BASICS from area court systems, attorneys, and/or other referral sources.

When students are engaged in these services, they also have close access to additional support throughout the Rosecrance continuum of care, including individual therapy and group therapy.
