Rosecrance honors the nation’s first responders

First responders across the country put their lives on the line to keep Americans safe as they respond to natural disasters, tragedies, and accidents.

On National First Responders Day, observed on Oct. 28, Rosecrance is honoring the men and women whose daily jobs come with extraordinary challenges that they face with bravery and dedication.

“Today, as always, America’s first responders are on high alert and fully prepared to serve, standing by at all times,” said Greg Tierney, Vice President of Clinical Operations for Rosecrance Behavioral Health. “On this day of celebration, we pay tribute to these courageous men and women who have answered the call of duty. We also pause to remember the heroes we have lost and honor their memory.”

National First Responders Day is also a call to action. First responders have a challenging job that can significantly impact their mental health. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, around 30% of first responders experience behavioral health issues such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, compared to 20% in the general population.

It’s crucial to support our first responders. With proper resources and awareness, they can lead healthy, productive lives and pass on their knowledge and skills to the next generation of first responders. However, some may find it hard to talk about their stress and anxiety. Some may not even realize that their stress levels and unhealthy coping mechanisms can lead to a decline in mental health.

Rosecrance recognizes first responders’ and veterans’ unique needs when seeking help and provides a healing environment designed to offer support through colleagues who understand the rigors of life on the front lines. As more veterans pursue a career as first responders, more opportunities are available to them to seek the care they need.
