Rosecrance clients use art to honor veterans the week of Valentine’s Day

Clients at Rosecrance’s campuses are expressing gratitude by reaching out to thank veterans who may feel forgotten.

Each year, the week of February 14 is observed to give thanks to the more than 9 million veterans of the U.S. armed services who are cared for in Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers, outpatient clinics, domiciliaries, and nursing homes.

While undergoing residential treatment and focusing on recovery at Rosecrance, clients are unable to visit VA medical centers. To enable them to express gratitude toward veterans in the neighboring communities, the staff at Rosecrance organized a creative activity. Clients made cards with inspiring messages for the veterans to remind them that their service and commitment are highly valued and that they continue to hold an important place in their communities.

The project hit home at Rosecrance, which offers a treatment program for veterans with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. In addition, Rosecrance manages programs that provide transitional housing for homeless veterans in need of mental health services.

“Sending a card of appreciation may seem like a small gesture, but it allows clients to reflect on the positive aspects of their lives that they may have overlooked during their active substance use while reminding our most honorable that they are not forgotten,” said Abby Nelson, Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator for Rosecrance.

Cards will be delivered to VFW posts in Rockford, Illinois, and Champaign, Illinois.
