Megan Ervin, Miss Illinois 2012, speaks to the students at Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus on Friday, Oct. 19.

A graduate of Western Illinois University with a degree in Exercise Science, Ervin has dedicated her reign as Miss Illinois to fighting childhood obesity and encouraging fitness. During her speech, she stressed the importance of caring about yourself first.“What you are doing is for you, not anyone else,” Ervin said. She added it’s important to keep relationships with friends and family strong.

Ervin sees herself as a role model and encouraged patients to follow their dreams despite any setbacks. She told them it is important to have goals and aspirations in life.

As someone from the small town of Rushville, IL, Ervin said no one ever believed she would be on the Miss America stage one day. By believing in herself and staying healthy, Ervin was able to reach her lifelong goal and hopes to spread her message to young people all over the world.
