WHAT TO LOOK FOR

How life transitions might show up

Life transitions present us with a loss of control and uncertainty about the future.

Transitions often disrupt our routines and familiar ways of doing things. This can make us feel like we’ve lost control, which is stressful and anxiety-provoking. And while we’re in transition, the future feels unclear. We may not know what to expect, how things will work out, or even what we want. This uncertainty can be scary and lead to worry.

Common feelings associated with life transitions can include sadness and grief, and a wave of emotions all at once that can include excitement and anxiety, and feeling scared, hopeful, and overwhelmed.

Need immediate help?

If you or someone you know is in danger of hurting themselves or someone else — or if there’s any type of health emergency — please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Processing these feelings can be difficult. Big changes can make us question who we are and what we want in life. This can be especially true during major transitions like starting a career or becoming a parent.

Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about how you’re feeling. Talking about your worries can help you feel less alone and gain different perspectives.
