Each September, Rosecrance staff, clients, and alumni honor Recovery Month with activities at each site. This year’s theme, “Celebrating Connections” brought the Rosecrance community together to build relationships and express gratitude for the bonds that make recovery possible.
Early in the month, clients learned the value of experiential therapy through a visit from BraveHearts, an equine therapy program with stables in Poplar Grove and Harvard, Illinois. Other events included a day of yoga in a park, a Recovery art exhibit at the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus, and spirit week dress-up days.
In addition, staff and clients at the Ware Center, Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus and Rosecrance Harrison Campus designed individual braids that were woven together to symbolize the power of connection. Staff also were encouraged to reach out to colleagues in a scavenger hunt designed to encourage interaction across the organization.
“Our responsibility is to help break down the stigma attached to addiction and mental health and focus on what brings us together,” said Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator Abby Nelson. “When we all play our part, it makes a big difference how the public perceives recovery and it also makes a big difference on people living in recovery.”
