Small actions make a difference when it comes to emotional wellness
Educational Resources
Emotional wellness is an awareness, understanding, and acceptance of our emotions; it’s the ability to manage and cope with challenges and changes effectively.
Emotional wellness is distinct from mental health, but there is some overlap between the two. While mental health focuses on identifying and treating imbalances, emotional wellness is an individual’s ability to process their emotions effectively and manage daily stresses in a positive and healthy way.
Improving emotional wellness takes many forms, but several things an individual can do to strengthen their emotional wellness include:
- Pay attention to emotions and reactions. Be mindful of emotions—sad, frustrated, happy, or angry—and try to identify the source of those feelings so they can be addressed or changed.
- Keep a positive outlook. Staying positive is one way to ensure resiliency and maintain emotional wellness when life becomes challenging.
- Manage and reduce stress. Managing stress can come from daily actions such as following a regular sleep schedule, exercising, setting goals, and prioritizing tasks that encourage balance.
- Strengthen relationships. Carve out time to spend with loved ones and join different activities and classes offered in the community to meet new people and learn new skills.
Talking about emotional wellness is one thing but implementing it in our daily lives can be challenging, especially for those struggling with mental health.
Most struggles that stem from mental health do not improve on their own, and if left untreated, they can worsen over time. For anyone who experiences lingering feelings of sadness, anger, irritability, hopelessness, or other negative emotions, speaking with a mental health expert may be helpful.
