EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH

Gender expression?

It’s common for people to struggle with conforming to gender norms and the social pressures of expressing gender in specific ways. Individuals who struggle with gender expression and gender identity and those who identify as LGBTQIA+ face higher risks of mental health and substance use disorders.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

How challenges with gender expression might show up

Some of the common challenges related to gender expression include lack of understanding and safety concerns. Not everyone understands gender expression, and some people may make assumptions or ask intrusive questions. Transgender and nonbinary individuals, especially transgender women of color, face a higher risk of violence when expressing their gender in public.

Individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+ experience increased rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD that can be related to discrimination, stigma, and violence. LGBTQIA+ youth face higher risk of suicidality.

Need immediate help?

If you or someone you know is in danger of hurting themselves or someone else — or if there’s any type of health emergency — please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Along with the mental health challenges, LGBTQIA+ individuals face increased rates of substance use because of coping with stress and trauma, and self-medicating for mental health disorders. There are also challenges around gender identity, including gender dysphoria, discrimination, and difficulty accessing gender-affirming care.

LGBTQIA+ people of color face further challenges that include racism, discrimination, and microaggressions that can lead to behavioral health issues.
