Gambling addiction is more common than people realize. About 2% of adults in the United States meet the criteria for gambling addiction at some point in their lives.
Common signs and symptoms of problem gambling include:
- Using gambling as an emotional escape or considering self-harm because of it
- Gambling with more money to achieve the same level of excitement or satisfaction
- Unsuccessful attempts to control, cut back on, or stop gambling
- Restlessness or irritability when trying to stop gambling
- Loss of interest in other activities because of gambling
- Lying to family and friends to hide gambling
- Asking for help and money to pay for gambling debts
- A preoccupation with gambling

Rosecrance offers in-person and virtual treatment in Iowa for problem gambling that includes individual and group therapy, as well as psychiatric services for depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns. Rosecrance also offers family and couples’ therapy, and other supports for family members.
For gambling treatment, Iowa residents who meet eligibility requirements (state residency and income, plus family size at or below 200% of the poverty level) can receive a free initial assessment and free therapy services. Recovery support services are also available for problem gamblers who need extra support.
